To All Our Little League Cubs - Reminder about LL Tryouts

Nick Day, Monday, 24 November 2008

Greetings all,

Last Sunday the GCBA held the first of it's Little League try out days.

We noticed that none of you were in attendance & in the case of Alleygators & Robina players, there were no players from your clubs who attended.

Little League try outs will held 9.00am until 12pm Sundays, begining 23rd November 2008 & continue for approx 3-4 weeks at Surfers Paradise.

All players born between May 1st 1996 & April 30 1998 who are playing Little League Majors are elligible to try out.

I ask that you inform all elligible players at your clubs as these will be the only try outs occuring & only players who try out will be considered for selection.

Players ARE NOT to wear club shirts or caps of any kind.

Gold Coast Shirts & caps are acceptable.

Thanks,

Steve Brough

GAME REPORT Round 6: Seniors - Coomera Blue Vs Robina 1

Nick Day, Wednesday, 19 November 2008

Coomera Blue 9 - Robina 1, 6

He guys...well it was a hot Sunday morning and a great day for baseball. Everyone was focused and looking forward to improving on last weeks performance. Great to have Andy back again pumping everyone up. We took on Robina 1, who are always ready to play and who will put the game out of reach quickly if you let them. After taking the field, Glen set the tone of the game from the mound and struck out the first two at bat. A couple of fielding errors and some untidy play saw us down a couple, before getting in for a bat.

Well the boys turned in a tidy display with some solid batting all round. We saw some smart play, with patience the order of the day. Getting those walks really puts the pressure on the fielding team and gives us a chance to score. Well done guys.

We could of done a bit better in the field but as we get better in our positions and more familiar with each others play, we will only get stronger.

Some highlights of the game was Glen's pitching which was solid throughout. Some good solid play from Beau behind the plate (wish I had my video camera to film the out at 2nd you made...) and Mike at third. Tim and Robbie...good patience in the batting box...Craig...great catch to finish the game...

We have another tough team this week so lets keep the team spirit up, get focused early and dictate the game our way.  Well done boys.

Kristen, a BIG thanks again for you time in the scorer's den. Scott...we appreciated you helping with the umpiring in those hot conditions! Cam thanks again for supporting us with your ever increasing umpiring skills :)

Go Blues,
Go Cubs.

Cheers,
N

GAME REPORT Round 6: Under 14's - Coomera Vs Surfers Paradise

Nick Day, Wednesday, 19 November 2008

THE GAME

Well guys, another great effort on Saturday. Unfortunately we went down with a loss, but we scored a tonne of runs against a 3rd placed Surfers Paradise. We managed to stay alive for the entire two hours, which is a great sign that we are developing as ball players.

Our biggest highlight of the game was our batting, with James Symonds, Sam Godfrey, Aaron Robertson, and Oskar Godfrey all displaying excellent composure in the batting box. James managed to score 5 rbi’s in the game, an excellent achievement to reach.

Our pitching and fielding unfortunately was our worst aspect of the game. Pitching is a difficult task, but as pitchers it is up to you on the mound to change what isn’t working. You control the flow of the game, but with competitive walks, it destroys the game and generally any chance of winning.

Base running again cost us 4 unnecessary outs, and in one instance, a double play. Avoiding this would have meant a better shot at winning the game.

QUICK LESSONS:

Pitchers:  You can’t guide the ball. Best to give every pitch as much as you can. Aaron improved dramatically when he just let the ball go.

Runners:  When you are on base, it is your job to know how many outs there are. When there are two outs, you run on contact. Loaded bases.....you must run if the ball is on the ground. Your secondary lead should have you ready for this. When stealing bases, you cannot over run the bag.

Batters:  We are improving week after week. We have scored more runs than the team coming 5th. What does this tell us? Why are we not in 5th place? We need to balance it up with better fielding and pitching.  Keep it up.

Baseball is a tough game, but an old statistic that will never get change is, baseball is 90% mental, and 10% physical. This may seem unlikely, but practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Once your skills and abilities become muscle memory, and are applied in the game, they become 2nd nature. Where it gets sloppy is when you lose focus, become tired, give up, or become lazy.  If you are switched on, you are essentially ready for anything that comes your way, in the batting box, in the field, or as a runner on base.

THANK YOU’S

I would like to say thank you to Olga for scoring, Scott A for umpiring, and Cosso for putting on a BBQ after the game.

In short though, another great effort by you boys, keep improving, and I can see us moving up the ladder in no time.

See you at training

Rob
